Day 51 (October 10, 2006) - Lassen Volcanic National Park
<<^>>
Petr: I got to Lassen Volcanic National Park around 10:00 am and stopped by the Visitor Center to pick up a map. As I was driving inside the park, a bear crossed the street in front of the RV, so I immediately stopped in the middle of the road and while I was reaching for my camera, a car passed me and scared him away before I could take a picture. He was no more than 300ft away. For the rest of the day, I hiked on my own, about 5 miles (Laura would be proud of me) around the hot springs.

Laura and Francesca: We went shopping in the morning, then went back home for lunch and packing Francesca's bags. We then drove out to Ashburnham, MA and while Laura was driving and taking pictures of the changing colors along Route 2 (risking an accident every time she did that), Francesca took a nap since she did not care about the leaves turning. Our good-bye was short but sweet. I then drove to Concord to visit my friend Christine, and together we walked to a nearby bar/restaurant for a drink. We chatted cheerfully for a couple of hours, then I went home to get things ready for tomorrow.

Petr: Lassen Volcanic Park.

Petr: A view of the volcano.

Petr: The rock is warm to the touch.

Petr: Panorama.

Petr: A lake along my hike.

Petr: View from the parking lot.

Petr: The trail to the right leads to the summit, a 4-5 hour round trip. Some other time...

Petr: Helen Lake.

Petr: Here I was mesmerized by the clouds.

Petr: The road to the summit.

Petr: This reminds me of Yellowstone. Hot sulphur springs.

Petr: Another hot spring. The smell of sulphur permeates the air.

Petr: The steam temp is 140°F.

Petr: Boardwalks for tourists, so they don't burn their toes.

Petr: A chipmunk.

Petr: Contrasting colors.

Petr: Another steaming crevice.

Petr: Goodbye!

Laura: Entering Ashburnham, MA.

Laura: Foliage on Route 2.

Laura: More leaves.

Laura: And some more.
